No New Blogging Until Spring of 2009

Unfortunately, all of our blog postings are being put on hold until the Spring of 2009. There are several reasons for this, but the main reason is family priorities. We'll continue to keep our websites and art resources current and blog again next year.

Best Wishes for the New Year!

CIRCA Puerto Rico 09
Caribbean and Latin American Art

CIRCA Puerto Rico 09
April 17 -20 2009
The First International Art Fair in the Caribbean
San Juan, Puerto Rico (Fourth Edition)

CIRCA PR 09, fourth edition of the premier international art fair in the Caribbean and Central America, will be held from April 17 - April 20, 2009 at the new Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan.

THE CONCEPT FOR A CHALLENGING ART FAIR
In such a competitive world of art fairs, what makes CIRCA PR different? A quote from Artnet's editor Walter Robinson: "Well-organized and welcoming, Circa PR 08 presented an intimate collection of mostly emerging but sophisticated art". It's an art fair that's small in scale with 35 commercial galleries, and the friendly and exotic setting of Puerto Rico makes it a very nice distination. CIRCA PR redefines and embodies the concept of the ultimate art fair: intimate while intellectually challenging allowing gallerists, collectors and other art professionals to interact on a more personal one-to-one basis.

Open to galleries with an international focus on Modern and Contemporary art, especially young emerging art presenting painting, new media, installation, photography, sculpture, and video.

Simulacrum is essential in the paintings and installations of Ronald Morán. Morán creates totally static environments, mise en scene void of human characters. The subjects for Morán’s soft and quiet paintings depict household items or accessories of violence sheathed in a white nebulous material. Installations are often domestic or familiar spaces covered with white industrial cotton. Morán’s goal is to neutralize his subject and represent the impact of contemporary society’s lack of sensitivity to violence and the definitions of our domestic roles. For his first solo exhibition at Pan American Art Projects Morán will create an installation with a more political edge addressing our energy and environmental crisis.

Born in Chalchuapa, El Salvador n 1972, Morán studied art at Centro Nacional de Artes San Salvador and Universidad Dr. José Matías Delgado San Salvador. Morán has had twelve solo shows in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. He has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. In 2007, he represented El Salvador at the Venice Biennale.

Latin American Photography

The Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels, is hosting "Opening Maps" an exhibition of Contemporary Photography from Latin America. The exhibition will be on display through September 21st.

Alejandro Castellote spent several years organizing this exhibition, in a effort to present one of the most complete surveys of important artists, and trends in Latin American Photography. He worked photographers, artists, critics, historians, and people in charge of cultural institutions in the countries of Latin America. Opening Maps has deliberately chosen to leave to one side the usual themes of Latin American art and explore the eclecticism and subjectivity of artists who are sometimes almost unknown. By approaching things from three angles (rituals of identity, scenarios, and alternative histories), however, the exhibition nonetheless succeeds in tracking down the common denominators of a Latin American outlook on the world.

CIRCA Puerto Rico 08
International Art Fair

The Puerto Rico Convention Center will host CIRCA Puerto Rico 08, an International Art Fair. This will the third year that Puerto Rico will host the fair. Last year, the fair enjoyed 12,000 visitors and this year, the organizers are hoping to exceed more than 15,000 visitors. The art fair opens on April 11th and continues through April 14th.

In just two years, CIRCA Puerto Rico has shown its potential to give new visibility to the Caribbean art world where an exciting mix of regional artists, gallerists, institutions and collectors, together with a selection of young international galleries, offered a very personal and dynamic art fair. Among the highlights of the fair is “In the Spot”, a curated cutting edge artists’ section which offers curators the possibility of setting up a concept based exhibition from works exhibited at the fair and engage in a critical dialogue with the audience. Other sections include “Solo” in which individual artists present special projects, “District CIRCA”, where art publications present their latest editions, and a section for non-profit institutions.

Books about Latin American Art

Here're three books about Latin American art that you might want to add to your book collection. If you would like to have the book sent to you, click on the order from Amazon.com link under each book.

The Language of Objects in the Art of the Americas
By Edward J. Sullivan

In this wide-ranging book, a distinguished scholar of Latin American art explores the meanings of created and depicted objects from the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions of the New World. Edward J. Sullivan begins with objects exchanged during encounters between indigenous peoples of the Americas and newly-arrived Europeans, and he pursues the discussion to the present day, as artists engage in breaking down constructed concepts of “Latin American-ness.” Sullivan’s scope is sweeping—the changing meanings of objects over five centuries—and he encourages deeper conversation about the complexities of today’s culture of the Americas.

This generously illustrated volume invites the reader to travel across time and national boundaries to examine an array of these extraordinary and meaningful objects.

Art Cuba: The New Generation
By Holly Block

The art scene in Cuba is thriving as never before. Young, politically active artists are stretching the limits of creative freedom and, as tourism to Cuba continues to increase, making their mark in the international art world. Coming at a time when Americans' interest in the country and its art is at a peak, this is the first major survey to show the wide range of art coming out of Cuba today.

Overflowing with illustrations—including 100 colorplates—Art Cuba presents exciting new works, most produced in the past five years, by more than 60 artists. The mediums extend from oil on canvas, pen and ink, watercolor, lithography, and mosaic to photography, sculpture, embroidery, and performance art.

Latin American & Caribbean Art: Moma At El Museo
By Miriam Basilio, Deborah Cullen, Luis Perez-Oramas, Gary Garrels, Fatima Bercht, Harper Montgomery, Rocio Aranda-Alvarado, James Wechsler

MoMA at El Museo: Latin American and Caribbean Art from the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art is, as the title suggests, an exhibition highlighting artworks selected from this major collection. But it is so much more: A collaborative effort between the two New York museums, this exhibition and accompanying catalogue present over 100 paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, and illustrated books produced by artists from Latin America and the Caribbean, selected from MoMA. Notably, it is this very collection that has created the paradigm of "Latin American Art" and has helped shape the ever-burgeoning art historical and cultural studies in this area, both in the United States and abroad.

Short essays follow on key works added in each phase of the collection's growth, examples of which include work by Diego Rivera, Jos Clemente Orozco, Antonio Berni, and David Alfaro Siqueiros in the 1930s; Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Matta, Roberto Berdecio, and Wifredo Lam in the 1940s; Rafael Montanez Ortiz, Jesus Raphael Soto, Marisol, and Fernando Botero in the 1960s; and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Los Carpinteros, and Vik Muniz today.
